The Aistro Journal

I write about the parts of Jyotish that are hard to get a straight answer on. Long pieces, worked out from the old texts.

The Twenty Seven Nakshatras: Deity, Substance, and the Tara Cycle

The signs are the coarse layer. The nakshatras are where a chart starts saying something specific, and the deity of a nakshatra tells you more than any keyword list ever will.

The Sixteen Divisions: What a Varga Chart Actually Measures

A varga is not another chart. It is a magnification of one department of the same chart, and reading it as an independent horoscope is the most common way practitioners go wrong.

Knowing you are in Jupiter over Saturn tells you almost nothing on its own. The work is in what those two planets actually promise in your chart, and whether they can deliver it.

Exaltation, dignity, functional nature and strength are four separate axes, and collapsing them into one is why so many readings of a strong planet turn out wrong.

Yogas, Properly Understood: Formation, Result, and Cancellation

A chart full of raja yogas is not a promise of anything. An unfructified yoga is a promise nobody collects, and the dasha sequence decides which promises get kept.

Ask for a topic

There is a great deal in Jyotish I have not written about yet, and I usually only learn which parts people are stuck on when somebody tells me. If there is something you have never found a straight answer on, put it here. I read all of them.

Easier with your own chart open

Most of this makes more sense when you can see it in your own chart. Aistro works out the divisional charts, the dasha chain and the Jaimini significators I keep referring to, and it shows you how it got there instead of just handing you an answer.
